March Announcements

February 28, 2011

Hey guys!

I hope everyone had a great February as it now comes to a close. I just have a few announcements and updates to pass out here since I feel they are of interest to you guys.

First of all I want to thank everyone who was able to stop by our booth at the National High Magnetic Field Lab Open House this past Saturday. I didn’t get a chance to see everything but I know there were tons of people, especially at our table. It was a great success. I want to put out a special thank you to Anthony Hazel and April Byrne who stayed the whole day and helped out tremendously. We made an awesome team. It was great to see some familiar faces and meet all the new people that I haven’t seen before. It really was a great success.

If you didn’t get to go or couldn’t find our table (we were WAY in the back by the dried ice ice cream) then you might not have seen that we got our new t-shirts in. We still have a lot in our stock, along with other lingering merchandise that is always for sale. Here’s a list of the prices, as some have been updated:

T-Shirts: $12
Messenger Bags: $15
Polos: $15

We will be ordering hoodies within this next week so I’ll keep everyone updated on that as the ordering comes along. At the open house the messenger bags were very popular so if anyone wants to see one or is interested in buying them, shoot me an email and we’ll set up a meeting time. This is the same for any merchandise available. If you want to buy something, let me know and we’ll meet up. We have Youth shirts as well, in both garnet and grey too, just to keep that in mind.

So again, thank you for everyone who came out, who visited, who helped and who bought merchandise! It was an amazing turnout.

Next on the agenda is our March meeting. As we have spring break coming up next week, we won’t be having it until the third week of March at least and the idea is being tossed around as to whether we want a speaker or if we want a cool movie/get together deal. More news on this will definitely be coming in the future so keep your eyes open for all that.

Next! The Undergraduate Poster Session is fast approaching so anyone who is currently doing research and wants the chance to win some free money (who doesn’t like free money?!) please email Dr. Roberts at wroberts@fsu.edu and let him know you will be participating in this year’s poster session. Not only do you compete with your peers for monetary prizes but you also get to see what your peers are working on and what the current research is around the FSU labs as well as those at the NHMFL. I strongly encourage everyone doing research to participate. It truly is a great experience.

Finally, I’ve been told multiple times that a lot of people aren’t receiving my emails. I, unfortunately, can’t add those persons to the mailing list myself but I can pass their emails along to Dr. Blessing who can control that. So, if one of your friends is a physics major and hasn’t been receiving my emails, then please tell them to email me at alm07m@fsu.edu or Dr. Blessing at sblessin@fsu.edu to get added to the mailing list. Otherwise, our SPS website is consistently updated by our amazing Webmaster Aaron Murphy so all announcements are there on the front page.

If anyone has any questions, then please send me an email and I’ll do my best to help.

Thanks and have a great Monday!
- Mandy

Additional February Announcements

February 16, 2011

Hey guys!

I just have a few reminders and some news.

First of all, the February SPS meeting is this Wednesday at 5:30 pm in 707 Keen. We will be having some Navy officers come in to discuss career fields with the Navy and they are providing food and drink. As well we’ll be having some of our graduating seniors speaking about the research they do and any possible professors who are looking to take some undergraduates on next year for research. This is a great way to see what some students are doing and start getting interested in research. Starting earlier is always better so why not get a head start now?

Next, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory is having its open house on February 26th and SPS will have a table there! The open house runs from 10am to 3pm and last year had about 5,700 people attend! That was pretty incredible to me. But, as such, we’ll be needing volunteers to help out at the table. We’ll be having three demos of our own, all cool and nifty, and all you’d have to do is be personable with a lot of people (lots of kids too!) and be able to explain these rather simple demos. It’ll be a lot of fun and really exciting as the Mag Lab has a bunch of other really cool and fun stuff to do as well. We want to have at least three people at the two tables at all times because we’ll be selling merchandise as well. We’d like for two people to work the demos and one person to sell merchandise at one time. So if you’re interested get back to me ASAP and we’ll start working out hours. It really will be fun and I encourage anyone who wants to have a fun Saturday to email me ASAP about volunteering.

With that in mind I’d like to announce that we’re going to be ordering new merchandise within the next two days and we should have it all in by the open house so if you are looking to buy some new shirts or were interested in the hoodies before they sold out, come by the open house or email me and we’ll set up a meeting time for you to purchase one! We have both normal adult sizes AND kids sizes (in shirts) now, though we won’t be selling those before the open house.

Finally, I’d like to remind people (even though it’s a little ways off) all undergraduates who are currently doing research to begin thinking about participating in this years Undergraduate Research Poster Session. It is an excellent event that allows us undergraduates to exhibit the research we’ve been doing and share our knowledge with people throughout the department as well as from others AND compete for monetary prizes! I highly urge everyone to do it, even if you’re nervous. It is an excellent way to practice your public speaking skills and really nail down your knowledge of your research by explaining it to others. You’ll have to do this type of stuff in grad school as well so why not get some low pressure practice now while also competing for prizes?

If you’re interested in participating please email Dr. Roberts at wroberts@fsu.edu as soon as possible.

So to wrap things up:

- Our February meeting is this Wednesday, February 16th @ 5:30 pm in 707 Keen. Food and drink will be provided.

- The NHMFL is having their open house on Saturday, February 26th from 10am-3pm and SPS will have a table of demonstrations there and we’re looking for volunteers to work the table. If you’re interested in helping out email me ASAP and we’ll start working out times. We need to have three people at the table at all times: 2 working the demos and 1 selling merchandise.

- We’re ordering in new merchandise and it will be here before the end of the month so keep an eye out for all that. We should be selling it at the open house as well so if you’re planning to go to the open house be sure to stop by our booth.

- And finally if you’re interested in participating in the Undergraduate Research Poster Presentation email Dr. Roberts ASAP.

Cheers!
- Mandy

February Meeting

February 8, 2011

Hey guys,

Our next meeting will be next Wednesday, February 16th, at 5:30 in 707 Keen as usual. LT Detrick J. Guillory from the Navy Officer Recruiting Station will be coming in to give a presentation on Navy Officer Careers. They will be providing food and drinks this time around so it’ll be a surprise what all will be offered. He’s said the talk will be short (~10-15 mins) with time left over for questions at the end. With that in mind we’ll also be having some of our graduating seniors speak about some of the research they do and which professors might be on the lookout for another student to take on once the seniors are gone. So I encourage you to come! Last months attendance was really great and so I hope this time around we have as good if not a better showing.

Thanks and see you there!
- Mandy
